When experiencing pain or discomfort, most people do not ask for assistance until it’s too late. Many of the dental issues will begin without any knowledge. If these types of dental issues are not handled properly, they can worsen over time. Being able to identify early warning signs will help you avoid additional costly skill and/or complex problems.
Here are some basic signs that show that you should schedule an appointment with your dentist as soon as possible.
Toothache as an Indicator of a More Serious Condition
There are numerous causes for toothache, and most are very apparent. If you have ongoing discomfort resulting from a single tooth, then you could be suffering from an issue that is causing this tooth pain. If you don’t seek treatment for your toothache, you run the risk of developing an abscess around that area.

If your gums bleed when you brush or floss, this is not considered to be a normal finding. If there is bleeding occurring in your gums, this can signal an initial occurrence of either early gum disease or gingivitis. If left untreated, gingivitis can progress to periodontitis as well as the eventual loss of your teeth.

- Red, swollen gums – healthy gums are firm and pink, but if they become swollen, red, or tender this may indicate an infection or gum disease and will need to see a dentist for treatment.
- Loose or shifting adult teeth – all adult teeth should be firmly seated in the bone and should not move; if your tooth is moving and/or changing positions in your mouth the potential cause may be bone loss or extensive periodontal disease.

The Advantage Of Early Detection
When diagnosed early on, oral diseases can be treated more easily and at a lower cost than if left for some time. If left undiagnosed, oral disease may cause significant damage to another part of your body or may require you to seek treatment for a serious complication such as tooth loss, or a systemic issue. Additionally, regular dental evaluations help identify disease prior to its becoming serious problems.
When Should I Visit My Dentist For Regular Cleanings?
You should have routine cleanings & checkups at least once every six months (or sooner) unless you have some of the signs…in which case you should go to the dentist ASAP – whether you are symptomatic or not.
Your mouth is often the first area that will show any signs of other diseases happening within your body. By knowing the signs, you can reduce your risk of having any issues with your health and your pocketbook, as well as help keep your teeth in great condition.
