Over time, orthodontic care has changed quite a bit. There are many different ways to get straighter teeth and a nicer smile now than there were before. The two most common ways to get straight teeth these days are: by using clear aligners or by using metal braces. At the Centre for Smile Jaipur, many of our patients have asked us which type of orthodontic appliance is best for them. With that in mind, here’s some general information about these two types of orthodontic appliances so you can make the right choice when determining what treatment option might be best for your new smile!
What Are Traditional Braces?
Traditional braces use metal brackets and wires attached to the teeth to gradually move them into the correct position. They have been used for decades and remain one of the most effective orthodontic treatments.
Advantages of traditional braces:
Traditional braces offer many advantages. They can correct some of the most complex orthodontic cases; work on people of any age; provide very precise tooth movement; and are usually less expensive than aligners. The one disadvantage is that these braces can be seen much more than clear aligners and may require additional care when you eat or brush.
Invisible Orthodontics
Invisible orthodontics (also known as “clear braces”) are made of a clear or transparent material (plastic). They cover each tooth in your mouth and help align your teeth gradually by applying pressure. You can take them off to eat and drink or clean your teeth. They feel great against your gums, are comfortable to wear, and do not add any additional dietary restrictions to what you can eat.
Working professionals and other people love using invisible orthodontics instead of conventional braces (i.e., metal wires and bands) for their cosmetic benefits.
Key Differences Between Invisible and Traditional Braces
Look
- With clear aligners you will not see them at all
- With metal braces you will see them because there are brackets/wires attached to your teeth
Comfort
- Clear aligners are made out of a smooth material
- Metal braces may cause your gums to feel irritated when you first start wearing them
Convenience
- Clear aligners can be removed while eating and brushing teeth
- Metal braces will stay in your mouth the entire duration of orthodontic treatment; they cannot be taken out
Level of Complexity
- Clear aligners will only be able to correct small/moderate amounts of misalignment
- Metal braces can correct more complicated orthodontic treatments than clear aligners can.
Deciding on the Optimum Type of OrthodontIC Treatment
Which orthodontic way to obtain your orthodontic treatment is right for you depends on several criteria such as: the level of misalignment of your teeth, your lifestyle and employment position, your financial status, and how long you anticipate treatment taking.
